Should the Cincinnati Bengals Pull the Plug on Their Season?

The Cincinnati Bengals have turned into an unmitigated disaster after being blown out by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football to close out week 4 in the NFL. Although this is their first season under head coach Zac Taylor, it is now safe to wonder if it is already time to pull the plug on the Bengals for this year. The team is winless at 0-4 and although they seemed feisty to start the season, the results have gone through a consistent decline over the last few weeks. Receiving a drubbing by none other than the previously winless and Mason Rudolph-led Steelers may be the beginning of the end of the current season for these Bengals. One has to admit that to call a season over after only the first quarter of the season does seem to be a bit hasty. Taking a closer look at the Bengals, you see a team that doesn’t look too competitive as it ranks 30th in the NFL in points scored and 27th in yards per game while having a defense that is ranked 28th in points allowed per game and 24th and yards allowed. Combine both and you have a recipe for disaster. The biggest issue seems to be the fronts on both sides of the ball. The offense ranks dead last in the league in rushing while also having given up 19 sacks in only 4 games. Defensively, the Bengals are 27th in rushing yards allowed per game. To put it quite simply, the Bengals are not very good right now. The question now becomes about whether or not they do everything they can to squeeze out some wins to be a 5 to 6 win team at best or do they go into a development mode and give up on the season. Andy Dalton hasn’t been horrible, but he also hasn’t achieved playoff success. They can look to start playing Ryan Finley in the next couple of weeks to see if he is their future, and if he’s not, they can look to draft someone in the potentially quarterback deep 2020 draft. The same can be said at many other positions including tight end and on the defensive line. This is not the ideal situation for a rookie head coach, but if Cincinnati starts to rebuild, they can start building a team that matches the personality of what Zac Taylor is looking to create. The road will be long but it could be worth it.
