How the Mighty Have Fallen

I'm watching the New England Patriots on NBC on Sunday Night Football against the San Diego Chargers and I am amazed with how poor they look. Matt Cassell does not look like an NFL quarterback, and the defense has looked extremely vulnerable thus far. Cassell has shown an inability to complete passes consistently that travel more than 6 or 6 yards, the defense has been carved up by both the run and the pass, and the special teams has been tormented by Darren Sproles to this point in the evening. Did Tom Brady really mean this much to this team? I have believed that Brady has been this team's most important player for years, and there is no question what he has meant to the outcome of the offense, but the defense's lack of solid play has surprised me the most. When Brady went down, the defensive players said all of the right things about how they would have to step up and that defense wins championships and that this was their turn to shine after the offense made so many headlines last season. The problem is, it has been all talk and no action. The Patriot defense has been pushed around going all the way back to the preseason. The scary thing is that the front seven was supposed to be the strength of the defense, and instead they have been extremely vulnerable to the run as offenses have found no problem running the ball down their throats when they choose to. If the Patriots are to be a Super Bowl contender this year, it will have to be on the strength of the defense and not the arm of Cassell. This team has been beaten by the Dolphins, given a tough test by the 49ers, and were taken to the limit by the Kansas City Chiefs. Not good for a team that had preseason aspirations of making a Super Bowl trip to Tampa Bay. Instead of enjoying the fact that the AFC is easier than everyone thought it would be, the Patriots have been guilty of contributing to the cause. Who would have thought on the day before last season's Super Bowl, that we would be witnessing quite possibly the end to the Patriot dynasty?
